OBITUARY
Paul Alterson
6/20/1944 – 11/9/2025
Paul Alterson of Merrick, New York, passed away at home on November 9, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born two houses off the beach in Far Rockaway, Queens, Paul was the eldest of four boys. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Thelma, and by his brothers Richard and Mike. He is survived by his twin brother, Lorin.
A graduate of Far Rockaway High School, Paul met the love of his life, Linda Koestner, while working at Kemp & Beatley. The two were married on August 8, 1970, and raised their children, Thomas and Kristina (DiStasio), in Merrick.
Paul spent 20 years working in Manhattan’s Garment District before opting for local jobs that allowed him to be closer to home. In his later years, he enjoyed the everyday rhythm of working alongside his brother Mike—a bond that brought comfort and companionship.
Those who knew him remember his telltale limping gait, the result of a devastating leg injury in 1981 that left him in chronic pain. But he refused to be sidelined. Every day, he pushed through the pain, and every evening he was outside, tossing a ball or shooting hoops with his son Thomas until the sun went down. He showed up—faithfully and without complaint—teaching his children resilience and toughness.
An Army National Guard veteran, Paul loved the beach, sunshine, and body surfing—often recounting stories of him and his brothers battling hurricane waves on Far Rockaway beach. He enjoyed war movies, science fiction, the New York Giants, a good steak, seafood fra diavolo or sushi, and quiet evenings with his family.
Paul found deep joy in being a grandfather to six—James, William, and Grace Alterson; Isabella, Mia, and Charlotte DiStasio. From applauding every recital and theatre performance to listening intently to Grace’s latest farm updates and his grandsons’ mountain hunting adventures, Paul cherished every chapter of their lives.
Through the final years of illness, he faced every challenge with calm courage, deeply grateful for Linda’s devoted care.
Paul leaves behind his loving wife, Linda; his son, Thomas and wife Marisa; his daughter, Kristina DiStasio and husband Christopher; and his six cherished grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, dry wit, and steady devotion to the people he loved.
Visitation to celebrate Paul’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Bellmore Funeral Home, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
