Dorothy Lucille Costa (née Florez) passed away on September 18, 2026 in Rockville Centre, New York. A long-term resident of Bellmore, she is survived by her beloved son Richard and his wife, Terri; her grandchildren Tara, Michael, Cece, Lizzy, and Victoria; her great-grandchildren Olivia, Ashley, Brody, Savanna, Sadie, and Alycesandra; and her siblings Joseph, Margaret, and Juanita as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Patrick Costa (1926-1980), her son Anthony Frank Costa (1949-2010), and her grandson, Richie Costa (1993-2002), as well as by siblings John, Mary Ann, Frank, Anthony, Michael, Eleanor, and Raymond.
Dorothy’s life was defined by her bonds of love and loyalty to her family and friends. As the eldest of a large family, Dorothy was often a surrogate mother to her siblings. For instance, at times, some family members found a place to call home with her and Tony until they were properly situated.
Dorothy loved to cook and woe be to anyone who tread into her kitchen without acknowledging her respectful place as commander of sink, and stove. She shared her welcome generously by hosting many gatherings over the years. Dorothy took care of, fussed over, and delighted in holidays, and celebrations, especially the additions of newborns in her immediate family and in those of other relatives and friends, as well as the weddings, graduations, and other meaningful events of the many people she knew. The only tribute she wanted was their happiness and maybe some chocolate. Dorothy laughingly admitted she was a chocoholic.
Dorothy was born March 14, 1927 to John and Dolly Florez (née Gunderson) in Brooklyn, New York. Over the years she resided in Brooklyn, Queens, and parts of Long Island. Her children were raised in Uniondale.
A mass service will be held at 10 am on September 23 at St. Barnabas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Bellmore.
