In Loving Memory of Diane Ondris
Diane Ondris, a beloved soul, found her peace among the comforting embrace of family, the soothing notes of beautiful music, and an abundance of love. She departed on November 1, 2023, at VNS Hospice House in East Northport, NY, at the age of 70.
Born on June 16, 1953, Diane was the cherished first child of Gladys and Rudolph Ondris. She grew up in North Bellmore, NY, alongside her siblings—Jimmy, Jane, and Lynn. Diane’s remarkable life path led her through a dedicated 40-year career as a nurse in the operating room, culminating in her retirement as a respected supervisor. Her choice of profession was no accident; Diane possessed an innate gift for caregiving. She dutifully cared for her parents in their times of need, extending her nurturing spirit to her siblings, nine nieces and nephews, and anyone fortunate enough to be touched by her grace.
Diane’s steadfast spirit faced the rare challenge of an aggressive brain cancer, that took its hold about a year and a half ago. With unwavering courage and optimism, she embarked on her battle, lifted by the unwavering love and support of her family, and the daily presence of her sister, Jane.
Family was the cornerstone of Diane’s life—a deep, profound love that knew no bounds. Her affection for her parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and their children was immeasurable and extraordinary. She served as a vital figure in her family, uniting them and creating a welcoming haven, filled with love, warmth, and meticulous decorations. In the late 80s, she purchased a house in Stowe, Vermont, which evolved into a cherished holiday home for her extended family of 18. This idyllic retreat was the backdrop for countless treasured memories—moments of togetherness, ski adventures, joyful storytelling, hearty meals, and boundless love.
Diane had a unique ability to make others feel comfortable, stemming from her nursing background and a natural desire to envelop her loved ones in warmth and care. Her laughter, kindness, and generosity were infectious. She excelled at crafting unforgettable experiences because, above all, she understood that family was life’s most precious gift. From wintry escapes in Stowe, VT, to summer getaways in Disney World, Carnival cruises, and worldly travels with her siblings, she eagerly explored the beauty of the world, sharing it with those she held dear. She championed her family members in marathons, triathlons, school sports, plays, dance recitals, and ski lessons, always their biggest cheerleader. Diane lived with a spirited and exuberant personality, expressing herself through impeccable style, always attuned to the latest trends. Her joy stemmed from the happiness of those she loved. Her generosity knew no bounds, whether it was in thoughtful gifts or creating heartwarming experiences that brought her loved ones closer.
Diane leaves an enduring imprint on her family, who owe their cherished collection of years of shared memories and their close-knit bonds to her. She is survived by her loving siblings and their spouses: Jimmy and AnnMarie Ondris, Jane and Rick Figalora, and Lynn and Mike Dougherty, as well as her nine nieces and nephews and their partners: Alyssa and Ryan Lutz, Meghan and Shane Hewson, Kelly and Mark Madias, Kaitlin and Lou Grove, Justine Dougherty and Dave Lyons, James and Lindsey Ondris, Sarah and Mitch Mercik, Matthew Figalora, and Michael Dougherty. And six great grandnieces and nephews. Diane now rests in the embrace of her beloved parents, Gladys and Rudy Ondris, and is reunited with many adoring aunts, uncles, and friends who preceded her on this journey.
We will gather to celebrate Diane’s remarkable life on Friday, November 3, at the Bellmore Funeral Home from 4 pm to 8 pm.
