Judy Gurovitz
6/7/1937 – 8/5/2022
Judith A. Gurovitz passed away on August 5, 2022 in New York City. She was born on June 7, 1937 in Trenton, New Jersey, the only daughter of Isadore William Gurovitz and Alice Fishberg. In 1955, she graduated from Trenton High School, and soon attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and English.
In 1960 Judy moved to Manhattan and began her first job as copy-editor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Through the 1960s and early 1970s, Judy worked as a photojournalist and associate editor for several prominent magazines, such as Time-Life, People, New York, and The Saturday Evening Post, providing first-hand coverage of national and world historic events. The funeral of President John F. Kennedy in Washington, D.C., The Beatles, and NASA Apollo 13 were among her many assignments.
With the closing of Life magazine in 1972, Judy embarked on a third career as a professional photographer and real estate agent in Manhattan, working for several notable firms headquartered in New York and traveling globally until retiring in the mid-1990s. Also in 1972, Judy took residence on East 74th Street in Manhattan, where she would live for the next 50 years.
In 1962, Judy was introduced to Richard James Moreland of Hartford, Connecticut, at an event on Fire Island. Richard would later become her life partner and best friend until his passing in 2014. Together Judy and Richard enjoyed oil painting at The Art Students League of New York, as well as jazz concerts, museums visits, and travel through Europe, Egypt, and the Caribbean.
Judy remained an inquisitive person of philosophy, a fine artist, and a supporter of the humanities throughout her life. She further supported causes for feminism, education, and journalism for a healthy democracy. Judy Gurovitz is loved and remembered by the family of Richard Moreland and others who experienced the gift of knowing her.
